5 Beauty Hacks That Work (and 5 To Seriously Avoid)!

Simply loop a hair tie around a towel rail or modern style bathroom radiator and dry your makeup brushes upside down. This sadly doesn't work with smaller eyeshadow brush but with large face brushes that take some time to dry it works a treat! Use a sponge eyeshadow applicator to create ombre nails (<a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/549228117036390470/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">example</a>) Finally a use for them pesky eyehadow applicators that definitely aren't up to the job of apply eyeshadow. A dab of nail polish on one of these applicators can create amazing ombre nails in seconds. I tried this out and the trick is to let your base nail polish dry first and then build up the ombre so this the effect is more opaque to the tip of the nail. Then while the nail polish is still wet a sweep of clear top coat will merge and smooth everything perfectly! To tame split ends spray hairspray onto an old but clean mascara wand and brush through Another simple yet effective hack here! This work perfectly on fine baby hairs around the hair line and any split ends or frizz. Mascara spoolie brushes can be picked up inexpensively or you can wash a wand from a used up mascara and keep it with your hair products for this job. Homemade natural face masks  From time to time trying out a homemade face mask is fun! Some DIY masks seen on Pinterest includes some chemical packed ingredients so I'd recommend avoiding those and sticking to all natural recipes. Some favourite ingredients to try - avocado, honey and banana. The one natural ingredient that you may want to avoid is lemon as it's fairly astringent and has bleaching properties. Conditioner in place of shaving cream for a close shave  This is a hack I use weekly in the shower after getting sick of shaving foam being too much. Conditioner is mild on the skin, lubricates the shaver without blocking it and creates a good guide of where you have shaved already. Plus it makes your legs feel silky smooth once you are done! And that's the thing about a lot of hacks... they actually work, but can be quite risky/harmful! I'm sure we are all aware that mascara harbours bacteria over time so when your mascara is starting to clump it's a sign you need to throw it away. So this hack is not only encouraging people to hold onto their mascara for longer but to actually multiple the bacteria inside but heating the tube up! Excessive levels of bacteria could lead to an eye infection so this isn't a hack you want to be trying out! Using a facial hair removal cream around your eyebrows to define them  Now this 'hack' I'm pretty sure started off as a meme, I guess to make fun out of DIY hacks! But it's actually found it's way onto Pinterest and people are actually believing it - crazy! Facial hair removal cream is a huge no-no around anywhere other than the mouth area. I guess it could seem like a logical thing to do for some but the problem is even if it was neatly applied cream has a tendency to soak in and spread out even by millimetres and that could mean the difference between having eyebrows and not having them! Mouthwash mixed with vinegar foot soak to remove hard skin  Another effective yet worrying hack, that's actually way too popular for my liking! Of course soaking your feet in this concoction would make the hard skin "fall away" because mouthwash contains pure alcohol so you are practically burning the skin off your feet, eeek! Not a good thing at all.  However soaking your feet in warm water and using a pumice stone is  more than fine. Sometimes I wonder how people come up with things like this! Using a hair dryer to heat up eyelash curlers for a longer lash curl  Any kind of heat around the eye area is risky especially on the eyelid, eeep! Eyelash curlers do a good enough job if you ask me and heat won't perm the lashes in any way once mascara has been applied, so I don't really understand how this hack became so popular... actually I do - magazine tip sections! The cheap metal of eyelash curlers can heat up to a high temperature within seconds with a blast from a hot hair dryer and that's something you don't want near your eye. Homemade pore strips  Another popular hack that seems to be doing the rounds on social media and Pinterest right now and I wish people would stop trying it! To make your DIY pore strip simply mix charcoal tablets with glue... yes, you read that correctly, GLUE! Peeling off a little glue from your fingers after getting craft, fine. It may be that I'm totally over Winter or the fact that slowly the evenings are becoming lighter, but Spring has been on my mind lately and I'm going with it.  Spring is a time for blush tones, lighter makeup and basically a few new treats! I can't get enough of it, in fact I dedicated <a href="http://www.makeupsavvy.co.uk/2016/10/is-charlotte-tilbury-magic-foundation.html" target="_blank">an entire blog post</a> to it! Side note: I'm not one to spend on high end foundations as I truly believe the high street do a good enough job (especially Bourjois, Rimmel & L'Oreal) but after trying a sample of CT's Magic Foundation I was blown away and had to get it, I even convinced my sister to picked it up after forcing her to apply it and seeing the magic for herself. However come Spring/Summer I know my glorious Magic Foundation will be too high coverage and something slightly more sheer and dewy is in order. This is where Wonder Foundation steps in as from looking at many a before and after image of the foundation application on Google I could instantly see why it's a popular choice for many. Flattering on all skin tones and types, perfectly dewy and not to mention light reflective in all the right areas to give a radiant glow to the face. I'm in!  <h3> Philosophy Amazing Grace 60ml - �33.00 <a href="http://www.boots.com/en/Try-Me-First-philosophy-amazing-grace-spray-fragrance-60ml_1217748/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE</a> </h3>This was a scent I picked up by chance in a Boxing Day sale many years ago now and since then it's been a re-purchase situation. You know the first day in Spring when you decide to brave opening all the windows and put fresh bedding on the bed? Well this scent encapsulates that very smell. Basically this is the cleanest and softest of scents that smells firstly of fresh linen with a floral hint. Just perfect for Spring and perking up your mood. Sadly I used my last drop in December (I use it all year round because I love it so much) so this will be a definite re-purchase very soon. <h3> NYX Makeup Tricks of the Trade Set - �25.00 <a href="http://tinyurl.com/hopctgs" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE</a></h3>Now this isn't Spring related as such but I randomly came across this product on Feel Unique last week and may have let out an audible "ooo". I don't know about you, but I've never seen a similar set from NYX before! If you love the brand, and who doesn't, then this is a great way to explore more products. The set includes 7 products which is good value for money in my opinion and contains some star products such as the Liquid Illuminator, Matte Setting Spray and Butter Gloss in Creme Brulee. Should I treat myself to this? <h3> Matalan Dreamer Sweater - �16.00 <a href="http://www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/S2648680/slogan-jumper" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE</a></h3>I spotted this literal dream of a sweater in <a href="https://youtu.be/pqcfk3Rxgtg?t=4m4s" target="_blank">Hannah Gale's recent Matalan Haul video</a> and instantly thought 'Boden', which if it was from Boden would cost around the �70 mark! So first, well done Matalan! This light knit would look perfect paired with your favourite skinny jeans, a pleated midi skirt or even with a shirt underneath. Such a lovely versatile piece that I think I need in my wardrobe this coming Spring/Summer. <h3> Village Candle Lemon Pound Cake - �12.99 <a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Village-Candle-Double-Wick-Medium-Candle-Jars-Various-Fragrances-/181900203562?var=&hash=item2a5a18d62a:m:mh1UUfwY4yBp3ARsKkl46gg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE</a> </h3>Village Candle candles are without a doubt my favourite candle brand, yes, even over Yankee Candle, which I agree they do look identical to. The reason for this is that they create the most true-to-scent candles I've come across, which really blow Yankee Candle out of the water if I'm honest. I'm currently burning a Honey Creme candle from the brand which is divine but I know I need Lemon Pound Cake in my life come Spring. I've already tried this out in a small votive candle so I know that it's incredibly yummy but also light thanks to the lemon, the perfect combination for me come Spring. The theme of the January box (which you can still pick up <a href="https://www.glossybox.co.uk/beauty/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a> until the end of the month) is a take on the super food movement but with beauty products instead and is actually a collaboration box with Instagram-famed Deliciously Stella; a parody account taking the chia seed biscuit out of 'clean' eating. Which to be honest I'm just not sure about for a large brand like Glossybox... but then again are the products selected by anyone else other than the Glossybox team? I think not.  Unusual choice of collaboration aside, this month's box is fairly skincare heavy which I know some will love and some will dislike. I personally would have liked to have seen one less skincare product in favour of another makeup product or even a hair product, but it is often swings and roundabouts with beauty boxes and I'm almost sure next month's Valentine's edition box with contain more in the way of beauty. So I was more than thrilled to receive this miniature eyeshadow compact sample. The shade is a matte deep plum that feels smooth and blendable. This may be a little daunting for some but makes a perfect shade for the crease to deepen any look up. The 0.5g size is pretty measly but I'm sure it will last awhile! Vitamasques Manuka Honey Face Mask  Sheet face masks are totally 'in' right now and although I don't find sheet masks as relaxing as cream face masks I do find they always give good results. Side note: I think the fact they are cold to put on and you can't be that mobile when wearing one, only horizontal, is the reason for my dislike of them! However, I will be using this as I love Korean skincare and anything honey based/scented I'm a fan of. Nothing jumps out at me with this product. The packaging is simple, no bold claims, a very mild to non-existent scent and the cream cleanser feels nice enough I guess. I'm sure I will use this but I expect it to be mild and nothing wonderful - milk cleanser never seem to remove all makeup I've found. In an industry with the likes of Pixi skincare a cleanser like this just doesn't cut it for me sadly. Nip + Fab Kale Fix Moisturiser Another brand I was happy to see in this month's box! In fact I've been wanting to try something from the Kale Fix range for a while now, so I may just have 'ooo'd' at this product. Although not full size the 30ml is enough to try out and perfect for travel. I've been using the Kale Fix Moisturiser for a few days and have found it slightly too heavy for my oily skin but a touch is perfect as a night cream. I've also been loving the fresh scent which feels very soothing on the skin. Another nice product here. True Organic of Sweden All your Need Is Me Lastly, an interesting multi-purpose product that can be used literally everywhere that requires intensive nourishment - lips, hands, elbows, knees, feet, cuticles, any dry patches on the face and even on the hair! Having never tried the infamous Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream I'm glad to now have a similar product that applies easily and is ideal for this time of year. This will be staying next to my bed to apply to my cuticles and any dry patches. Surprisingly the Yes To Lip Oil was the most expensive item of my order at �7.99. But I figured I love Yes To (generally), I can't get enough of argan oil based products and I'd never tried a lip oil before which must be more nourishing than a balm, or so I thought! On applying the lip oil for the first time I was surprised at the slightly sticky lipgloss-like texture and the pretty boring argan scent... but as long as it hydrated and moisturised my lips I could overlook them things! Did it hydrate or moisturised? Nope.  Basically, the lip oil gives the lips a nice sheen and the feeling that the oil is nourishing them but within 30 minutes it's soaked in and your lips are as they were prior to application. A bit fat fail really! I had so much hope for this product. I will of course continue to try out new Yes To products as I generally enjoy them, but sadly it just wasn't to be this time. Not only do I rate their products but who can resist a bit of rose gold packaging! Last time I picked up a sample of the cream concealer, which I already own full size, to keep in my handbag for touch-ups. So this time I went with the loose powder as 2g when it comes to powder products is quite a good amount. Really love this sample, especially the miniature packaging and it's just perfect to keep in my bag with a mini kabuki brush in case of any shine throughout the day. Darphin 8-Flower Nectar Elixir 4ml  I went for this sample purely because the full size product which is only 15ml costs a staggering �95.00! Making this 4ml sample, from my rough calculation, worth �25?! Crazy, right? Sadly samples are no longer available, but it just shows how good this sample service can be! It really is worth keeping your eyes peeled and checking a few of the high-end brands often. So far I haven't dared use my �25 sample, other than applying a bit to the back of my hand and I can say it smells incredible. I know this will be a total treat for my skin when I try it out! Burt's Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream 7g (still available!)  As a fan of Burt's Bees I thought I'd try out this fairly decent sized hand cream that actually comes in a miniature glass pot! Having smelt the amazing scent many a time whilst shopping I was glad to be finally trying it out. I've personally found it to be too thick however on extra dry hands I'm sure this would be amazing. Unfortunately this is no longer available, however you can find two more samples from the brand that look really nice. On first use I was instantly glad I went for this sample as it's such a nice cleansing oil that does the job. I'd be tempted now to buy this full size and once I've used up the sample the miniature bottle with be handy to re-use for travel skincare! Nars Laguna Bronzing Power 1g (still available!) Lastly, I went with a fairly small card sample of Nars Laguna but for virtually free I was more than pleased to pick it up! This will give quite a few application so that I can see if it's worth buying or not. So far I'm impressed with the tone of it and how soft the powder is. Since picking up the lip balm it hasn't left my pocket, bedside table or handbag; it goes everywhere with me basically. I'm someone that suffers from constant dry feeling lips and this balm really has helped with that. It applies smoothly even in cold temperatures, feels buttery on the lips, has a lovely light cocoa scent/flavour and just to top it off, contains SPF 15 making it a lip balm handy to use in summer. Other than loving the fact that it contains Argan oil, one of my favourite ingredients, I love that the formula feels super hydrating around the eye. This feels smoothing when applied and like your eye area has been refreshed but it also plumps up fine lines around the eyes. For me this is ideal eye cream to use in your 20's when lines haven't formed but the eye area can sometimes look dry and lack luster. The �5 serums aims to reduce the appearance of blemishes and congestion as well as balancing out sebum in the skin, all pretty amazing for oily gals! And thankfully this stuff actually works! I find after a few days of continual use the serum controls the oil levels in my skin meaning my T-zone is noticeably less oily and blemishes I have go within 2-3 days from when they appear! I also find it gets to work on the two small patches of congestion I have near my chin, practically clearing them up and leaving my skin much smoother. I'm pretty sure I will always continue to buy this product as similar skincare costs �30+ and this works amazingly well if you have oily, blemish-prone skin. Primark Rose Gold Eyelash Curlers  �1.00 Primark in-store  Primark are doing seriously well with their beauty range right now and catering for rose gold lovers with so many lovely gilded products. Having already owned a pair of Primark Eyelash Curlers before and liking them I couldn't resist picking up an even prettier pair. But what surprised me about this pair is that they are even stronger with a really good grip, meaning these really do curl the lashes well. A few squeezes of the handle near to the base of the lashes and you have a serious curl going on that doesn't drop, well not for me anyway. For the price these are just incredible and so pretty! Kiko Extra Sculpt Volume Mascara  �8.90 Kiko <a href="http://www.kikocosmetics.com/en-gb/make-up/eyes/mascara/Extra-Sculpt-Volume-Mascara/p-KM0030105100044" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a> or in-store  Last but not least I had to include my favourite ever mascara - yes, over Too Faced, Benefit and YSL! I'm all about volume when it comes to mascara and this KIKO one certainly does the trick with a medium sized brush that creates effortless volume, although wiggling it as the base of the lashes creates even more amazing volume. I have the mascara in the original format and waterproof (for summer and holidays) and like both equally. I would say this is a mascara that does need a week or so on opening so that the formula isn't as wet or just make sure the excess is pull off the brush onto the top of the tube before applying or it will be too heavy for the lashes. Other than that this is the best volumising mascara I've come across! I may have to keep this as a mini series for now as I really love bringing products that work so well. Then it dawned on me - does anyone even use single eyeshadows anymore?  Now I'm not talking eyeshadow pans that are put in a magnetic palette because that's just cheating. But eyeshadows that are singular in their own compact. Casting my mind back 5 years that was what my entire eyeshadow collection consisted of, albiet much smaller. Fast forward to 2016 and I have 15+ eyeshadow palettes! How did that happen? It makes sense... but gone are the days I treasured a single eyeshadow that much I 'hit pan', and I didn't even realise until 15 eyeshadows palettes in! Okay, so I may be a little drama llama about it but I guess the survivors of the eyeshadow palette takeover should be celebrated, hence this post! I want to know which single eyeshadows you still love and use, and possible would even re-purchase. Now I do have a nice collection of the Maybelline Color Tattoo shadows, but again I feel that's cheating because they are cream shadows and I can't see cream eyeshadow palettes taking off anytime soon. The same goes with loose pigment eyeshadow. I think. This mid brown shimmer is buttery smooth and reminds me of a much higher end eyeshadow. I generally get this out after I've created a neutral smokey eye and want to add some depth and shimmer in there. If I didn't own so many eyeshadow palettes I would definitely look at more single eyeshadows from No7!  I also have a rather lovely all over the lid kinda' shadow with Lavera Matt n' Cream �8.40 <a href="http://www.biggreensmile.com/products/lavera-beautiful-mineral-eye-shadow/latreyeshad.aspx?productid=latreyeshad" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE</a>. For some reason I never expected much from this eyeshadow as it's just a light brown shade. But this matte is a perfect base colour and blends amazingly well. The formula isn't powdery so no fall out and it's just a wonderful all over wash of colour to use.  Of course single eyeshadows are no more popular in pan format as they can be placed into a magnetic palette to create something bespoke. So it would be unfair to say I've lost interest with single eyeshadows as just this past month I've tried Makeup Geek eyeshadows and started off my collection which includes so many amazingly pigmented shades, but more on that in the new year!  I'd love to know if you still own and use any single eyeshadow compacts, and if so what are they? With eyeshadow palettes ruling I guess the single eyeshadows that survive in our collection have to be pretty special!  Fee xo.
